Description: I paid a visit to my old friend, the painter Alfons Karpiński. As usual, I found him busy at work. A small picture on his easel, almost finished – a nook in a painter’s atelier: a Chinese teapot on a small table, next to it a cup, a red porcelain vase, rather oddly shaped, and a handful of dry tiny white flowers. That is the whole picture. Not much apparently, and then all of that makes up a lovely harmony, especially on a canvas. (Franciszek Klein, ‘W pracowni Alfonsa Karpińskiego’, Czas, no. 40, 1928, p. 3).
When arranging still lifes, Karpiński used the same set of props: a Chinese vase and cups, porcelain figurines, a mirror, and decorative boxes. He depicted flowers in full bloom, sometimes slightly withered, with falling petals. Light reflexes and reflections are a significant component in these compositions.
